So have you checked out Watchmen yet? Although it is a film about super heroes it is nothing like Batman, Superman or Spiderman. The best way to sum it up is that it's a mix between Sin City, soft porn and Kill Bill!
Like Sin City the story is about an ugly world with corrupt people and full of violence. The violence is as graphic as you will have seen in the Kill Bill films - great action sequences but with scenes that squeamish people would not be able to watch. Knives are thrown into peoples' heads, bones broken in all sorts of directions and blood everywhere you look. As for the soft porn, well it seems like every 5mins you see someone's bare ass. Add that to the fact that there's a big blue man (Dr Manhattan - a scientist transformed by a radiation accident into a blue supra-human) who fails to wear any clothes so you always see his blue mmm frontal thing should we say... hanging out, it is only a select type of movie goer that will enjoy this film.
Set in a 1985 in which Richard Nixon is still in power and on the verge of going to nuclear war with the Soviet Union, Watchmen presents super heroes as ordinary imperfect people with masks on rather than super humans. The watchman called The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan from Gray's Anatomy and PS I Love You) is thrown off the top of a New York building and that sets the story for his former Watchmen comrades to come out of hiding and try to find out who killed him and why. The story then goes back in history over the formation and history of the Watchmen's past and lets just say The Comedian is anything but a Saint!! It's hard to distinguish if he is infact a hero or the most heartless villian you have ever seen.
In my opinion the film drags on a bit too much before getting back to the main story and there are too many scenes which are simply not needed. The prison scenes with Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), a borderline-sociopath are definitely worth watching. There's also a great twist at the end with something which initially seems evil actually stopping America and the Soviet Union from starting nuclear war with each other but many people in the cinema around me did not wait that long to find out. Not one of the best films ever but definitely weird enough to stick in the mind. A mix of Sin City, soft porn and Kill Bill would tend to do that!
