The film takes place in Boston, Massachusetts, where Irish mob boss Frank Costello (Nicholson) gets Colin Sullivan (Damon) to act as an informant within the Massachusetts State Police. At the same time, the police assign Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) to infiltrate Costello's crew. When both sides of the law realize the situation, the two men are sent out to discover each other's identities. Just when you think you have an idea of how The Departed well end, something happens to completely throw you.
